Indonesia Earthquake Appeal

26 June 2006

Early on the morning of 27 May 2006 an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Yogyakarta, a city on the densely populated island of Java. This earthquake destroyed more houses and left more people homeless than the tsunami that devastated the Indonesian province of Aceh in 2004.

The earthquake has claimed over 6,000 lives, and with around 46,000 people injured local medical resources have been unable to cope. Over 600,000 people have been left homeless and 400,000 of them remain in make-shift tents or without any form of shelter.

The decimation of infrastructure, sanitary and water systems means that survivors are living without the most basic requirements of everyday life. The community is also now at increasingly high risk of disease, with recent reports of tetanus outbreaks amongst the injured. Indonesia is once again facing a humanitarian disaster of epic proportions.

The ongoing need for humanitarian assistance and an estimated damage bill of over US$4 billion, means local NGOs in Indonesia are under-resourced to cope with the scale of need. With YOUR help Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA can support their efforts in these difficult circumstances.

In emergency situations it is important that grass-roots organisations with local knowledge, understanding and skills are supported by the international community in their relief and reconstruction efforts. Large international organisations have provided much needed funds and resources in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake emergency, however, local skills and initiatives are imperative for the long and ongoing process of rebuilding Yogyakarta.

Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA's Indonesian partner organisation, WALHI (The Indonesian Forum For Environment) has been active in providing immediate relief to the worst affected villages in Yogyakarta. WALHI is the largest forum of non-government and community-based organisations in Indonesia. Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA assisted WALHI in Aceh during the emergency phase after the tsunami on 26 December 2004 and continues to support WAHLI in the current community reconstruction process in Aceh.

Within hours of the recent earthquake WALHI was actively providing humanitarian relief to the injured and homeless. In the ensuing days WALHI and its network in Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java set up working groups that collected information about the needs of the survivors and used it to enable a quick and coordinated response to the crisis.

Based on its most recent needs assessment, WALHI's key objectives for relief in Yogyakarta are:

1. To provide accurate and timely information so that appropriate support can be sought from the public.

2. To facilitate the provision of emergency relief to injured survivors.

3. To provide basic needs for 1000 households (5000 people) for 1 month. This includes water and sanitation, medical support, logistics, and shelter.

With YOUR help Union Aid Abroad can support WAHLI to meet its objectives and continue to assist the people of Yogyakarta.

You can help by donating:

$1000 - To help fund the supply of a water tank (3000 - 5000 liters) to one village without water

$500 - To help fund the supply of a family size tent to one family without shelter

$100 - To help supply one medical team with communication equipment and a week's basic necessities

$50 - To help supply displaced families with a food package for one month

$30 - To help supply blankets and mattresses to one displaced family

Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA needs to raise money immediately to control the scale of the humanitarian disaster in Yogyakarta and begin rebuilding the lives of its people.

Your support will provide the displaced people of Yogyakarta with basic resources to survive the devastating conditions they are currently facing.

By donating to Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA's Indonesia Earthquake Appeal you are supporting the capability and strength of a local Indonesian organisation to respond to humanitarian crises and sustain their ongoing program of reconstruction.
