Cuban Children’s Fund
The Cuban Children's Fund was founded in 1998 and aims to raise funds and collect medical materials suitable for use by the Cuban Public Health System; and to develop bilateral links between the Australian and Cuban health sectors.
The project grew out of the need of the William Soler Pediatric and Cardiac Centre in La Havana, Cuba, for equipment and disposables for use in caring for children with cardiac problems.
In 1998, the Cuban Children's Fund entered into an alliance with Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA and since that time, over $506,000 has been raised for the purchase of equipment and training at the William Solar Hospital's Pediatric and Cardiac Centre. This equipment includes intensive care units and ventilators, defibrillator units and dental equipment and dental X-ray equipment. A Melbourne pediatric surgeon has also visited the hospital twice to lead and train the Cuban surgeons in difficult operations.
The latest donation for the hospital was from the Maritime Union of Australia, who raised $68,703 for equipment in December 2005.
You can support this work in Cuba by becoming a donor today.
