Aceh Program: One Year On
20 December 2005
Nearly 12 months after the Tsunami, the people in the Indonesian province of Aceh are slowly rebuilding their lives, their homes and communities. The devastation caused by the earthquake and the wall of water was immense. A total of 131,029 people died in Aceh, and another 37,063 are missing, presumed dead.
Comprehensive damage to infrastructure
|
The Tsunami created a humanitarian disaster and its impact include:
- A million people left homeless and have to live in tents and with relatives in other areas.
- Comprehensive damage to infrastructure such as houses (116,880), office buildings, water systems, hospitals, health centres, roads, bridges and drainage systems.
- Environmental degradation and damage with 57,758 hectares of land affected by salty water and 1.9 million livestock killed.
- Total loss of livelihood for survivors, and the death of professional workers. 563,538 jobs were lost and 60,000 workers were killed including teachers, nurses and highly skilled workers.
The scale of the disaster was equally matched by the generosity of Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA members. Donations from unions and individual union members totalled AUD$1.3 million. Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA was therefore able to support the survivors in Aceh and Sri Lanka during the emergency phase to provide immediate humanitarian assistance. Work is now continuing in the reconstruction and rehabilitation phase, with Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA working with local partners to improve the health and livelihood of tsunami survivors.
