Aceh: Reconstruction in West Aceh
In August 2006 APHEDA began working with several communities in West Aceh to rebuild much-needed facilities for the people living in the area. Working with a local NGO called YPK, APHEDA is building 10 community centres in different villages, which will function as important meeting points for leaders and members of the community.
Community leaders had approached APHEDA to assist with these centres, as very few of these facilities exist, yet they are crucial to the functioning of the community and to decision-making processes. So far, one of the centres has been built, and has been very well received by the community, including the head of the village who also uses it as an office (he had been using his house as an office and meeting place). Locals were integrally involved in the construction process, assisting with planning and land acquisition, and working as labourers on the building. The community feels a sense of ownership over this new facility, and meetings have already been held at the centre. Work has begun on the other 9 community centres, and they are expected to be completed in a few months time.
APHEDA is also building 17 houses for families in 3 villages in South-West Aceh whose houses were destroyed in the tsunami. This area has received little attention from other organisations assisting with reconstruction, and the families are living in temporary shelters until their houses are complete. Villagers in these communities have to walk quite a distance to collect water, which has prompted APHEDA to build 4 public toilet and water facilities. Members of the community will have easy access to running water and clean toilets.
These reconstruction projects are being funded by Volkshilfe Austria.
