Overview
Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA commenced support to Lao PDR in 2000, establishing a permanent office in 2002. The initial project of non formal vocational training through the Lao Women's Union, supported by AusAID, built on our experience in adult education and non formal education for women particularly in Cambodia and also Vietnam over 15 years.

From 2003 Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA expanded programs into several additional areas. One of these was livestock and fisheries development with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Luang Prabang.
In partnership with the International Labor Organisation (ILO) and the global union, Building Workers International, Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA also supported workplace health, safety and HIV/AIDS prevention with the Lao Federation of Trade Unions (LFTU) in an expanding number of provinces. APHEDA, with the support of the ILO, also assisted the LFTU to conduct HIV prevention and awareness raising training in construction sites throughout several provinces of Laos.
Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA has also been active in improving development cooperation and information exchange between INGOs in Lao PDR and between International Non-Government Organisations (INGO's) and donors. Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA co-initiated with 3 other INGO's, the Lao INGO network in 2004-2006 with the aim to share development experiences, improve learning and reduce duplication.
APHEDA, BWI and Union Network International also have taken a lead in promoting cooperation and information sharing between the LFTU and international trade unions and solidarity organisations.
In recent years, the program has expanded the HIV/AIDS awareness activities to include hospitality workers in Vientiane and Luang Prabang with the LFTU, the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, in a project funded by the ILO and APHEDA.
