PNG HIV/AIDS APPEAL02 June 2004Please help the people of PNG to stem the spread of this shattering disease.
HIV/AIDS is no longer concentrated in high-risk groups in Papua New Guinea, but is generalised in the population, with 1 in 9 cases in Port Moresby being mother to infant transmission. Conservative estimates suggest 15,000 people are currently infected, but it is speculated that the real figure could be up to ten times that. Workers in urban areas are particularly at risk of infection. As the epidemic spreads the economic consequences will be catastrophic not just for individual workers, but also for their families, communities and the nation. The labour movement in PNG now realises the impact of HIV/AIDS and its role in combating the epidemic. Reaching people through the workplace with messages that are developed by local people is a proven way of spreading health information. Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA works with the PNG Trade Union Congress training workers in HIV/AIDS prevention and developing a country-wide union response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. This impending health crisis for one of our nearest neighbours is being likened to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. In order to prevent the rapid spread of this disease, workers in PNG need your help. Please Donate Today! You can make a secure online donation or call us toll free on 1800 888 674 from anywhere in Australia. Or, you can send us a cheque/ money order to: Please make cheques payable to APHEDA Inc
