Vietnam

Overview

Vietnam's health report card is "good, but room for improvement". With 48 physicians per 100,000 people, with a 95% immunisation rate for children and with $US81 spent on health per person each year, Vietnam is at the better end of the least developed countries. However, the infant mortality rate is still 31 per 1,000 live births (Australia is 5 per 1,000), 22% of children are undernourished and 113 people per 100,000 people have TB.

Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA has concentrated its support to the poorest rural and ethnic minority areas and on emerging health issues such as occupational health and HIV.

Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA is assisting six projects in Vietnam, including gender policy development for trade unions, HIV education, village health worker training, vocational and rural skills development, and revolving loan funds for rural income generation for women.

Strategy

Vietnam was one of the first countries to receive Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA’s support due to the enormous needs in the aftermath of the Vietnam War 1963-75 and the strong involvement of many Australian unions in the anti-war movement. For Vietnam, this was only one of many wars fought over the last century to win and maintain independence.
